I really really enjoyed your post! I loved reading about your take on cultural competency, and the importance of understanding and celebrating culture in and out of the classroom. Over the last year, I have learned a lot about different cultures, and I believe understanding culture has the ability to make anyone a more empathetic person, which will absolutely lead to them being a better teacher. Culture is such a major part of identity, and it should not only be understood and acknowledged, but celebrated! We are going to be getting kids from all different backgrounds, who identify with a plethora of different cultures, and it is our responsibility to get to know their culture and how it impacts them as a student and as a person. I get so upset at the schools that try to strip kids of their culture, and generalize large groups of people. It is wrong, and I hope we all as future teachers work to fight against that.
